Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the looms of Busto Arsizio dressed Italy: its cotton mills earned it the nickname of «the Manchester of Italy», and the Textile Museum — in a former art nouveau factory — keeps the memory of an industrial season that here is identity, not nostalgia. The city is still among the hardest-working in Lombardy.
The trade, though, comes from much further back: in the Middle Ages Busto tanned hides, in the sixteenth century it wove fustian, and only in the nineteenth did cotton arrive. Six centuries of cloth in the same place, in a town that in dialect is called Büsti Gràndi. The sanctuary of Santa Maria di Piazza, a sixteenth-century Renaissance jewel, is the artistic surprise in the commercial heart. A strategic position: Milan and Malpensa twenty minutes away, the lakes a little beyond — Busto is a practical base that does not put on an act.
