Dairago lies in the upper Po plain, in the metropolitan city of Milan. Its name is said to come from Celts who settled here in the fifth century BC, whose suffix "-ago" denoted landholdings. In the late Middle Ages it was the seat of a pieve and one of the historic chief towns of the Contado di Burgaria, under Lombard, Frankish and, in part, Holy Roman rule. The oldest surviving document, a parchment from 922, names archpriest Domenico da Inveruno as head of the church of San Genesio; by the late thirteenth century a church register credited the pieve's jurisdiction, seated here, with 46 churches.
The town lost its independence in 1868, when it was merged into Arconate for falling short of the population threshold required by law, regaining self-government only in 1957. On its civic coat of arms a lion recalls the barbarian rule of the Burgari, while a checkered band imprecisely echoes that of the Lampugnani family, its original blue squares replaced with black ones; below stands the church of Madonna in Campagna, built in 1522 after a townsman's vow and topped by an eight-pointed gold star probably alluding to the cult of the Magi.
