Casciago too claims to be the Cassiciacum where Augustine withdrew with his friends before his baptism, and it is not alone: Cassago in the Brianza says exactly the same, with equal conviction. The two claims resemble each other in name and exclude each other in fact, and neither has any proof. What is known of Casciago for certain is humbler and older than it looks: a document from before 959 records the debt in money, wine and grain that some of its inhabitants owed to the sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte.

Three thousand eight hundred and sixty-five inhabitants in the province of Varese, a few kilometres from the lake. In 1538 Charles V authorised the sale of the territories of the Upper Fraction of Varese, and Casciago went to the Visconti Borromeo and then to the Litta Visconti Arese until 1796; the town of Varese, on the same occasion, was granted the privilege of never being enfeoffed. A land register of 1722 photographs the village: a little over 300 souls growing wheat, rye, mulberry and vines, four wine presses, and no inn, no mill, no kiln.
