Casorate Sempione

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,726 · Postal code: 21011

Casorate Sempione lies in the country around Gallarate, on the flat, with the sole exception of the little hill on which the parish church has settled. Its second name comes to it from the road: the via Severiana Augusta passed through here, the Roman consular road that linked Mediolanum to Lake Verbano and climbed from there to the pass the Romans called Summo Plano, the Simplon. The village grew up along that route, and the road remained its reason for being even when the empire was no longer there.

The coat of arms used in the past told the same story in two symbols: a bunch of grapes crossed by a stretch of road, the countryside and the traffic laid one over the other. The village lost its independence twice in the nineteenth century — in 1809 it was annexed to Arsago, which in turn ended up under Somma two years later, and again to Arsago in 1869. The first news of its inhabitants goes back to 1621, when the parish priest Luigi Mariani counted about five hundred of them.
