Saint Victor, patron of the Lombard necropolis

Arsago Seprio celebrates Saint Victor on 8 May, in the basilica dedicated to him.
In the tenth century, in the house of one Dagiberto of Arsago, two brothers were born who both became bishops: Arnolfo II was archbishop of Milan from 998 to 1018, Landolfo bishop of Brescia from 1003. It is not an isolated case: the pieve of San Vittore at Arsago is held to be one of the earliest rural pievi of the Milanese archdiocese, and the others broke away from it one by one — Gallarate around 1050, then Mezzana, and from Mezzana that of Somma.
This is why within a few square kilometres four pievi can be counted: the first ones were not established near Milan but far from it, where an eye was needed to keep watch on the city's behalf. Of the old pieve there remain the basilica of San Vittore, Romanesque, which goes back to the ninth century, and the baptistery, built two centuries later. The village added the Seprio to its name only in 1948.
