Granted official city status by a presidential decree on June 16, 1959, Somma Lombardo is a municipality in the province of Varese. Historically, the town was known simply as Somma until a formal administrative name change occurred in 1862.
Locally referred to as Suma in the regional Lombard dialect, the settlement is currently home to 16,905 residents. The municipality maintains its linguistic heritage while functioning as an established urban center in northern Italy.
