Cittiglio

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,972 · Postal code: 21033

Alfredo Binda was born here, one of the greatest riders in the cycling of the nineteen-twenties and thirties. The village has not forgotten him: every year the Trofeo Alfredo Binda is run at Cittiglio, one of the most important races in women's professional road cycling, and the race carries both the champion's name and the commune's.

Three thousand nine hundred and seventy-two inhabitants in the province of Varese, at the foot of the Sasso del Ferro. On the hill above the village stands the old parish church of San Biagio, documented from 1235 but Romanesque in its older fabric: the bell tower, with its twin-light belfry, is about a thousand years old. People go up on the third of February for the saint's feast, which ends with the blessing of throats and a bonfire. Behind the village the San Giulio torrent makes three falls between 324 and 474 metres; the path linking them is poorly kept beyond the first waterfall, and there have been accidents up there, some of them fatal.
