Fagnano Olona

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 12,141 · Postal code: 21054

The name comes from the Latin Fannianus, from the gens name Fannius, and the first document to name it dates from 1045, a parchment where emperor Henry III confirms the Milanese monastery of San Dionigi in its lands at Fagnano. The town sits above the valley cut by the Olona, and in the Middle Ages its job was watching the river and the road from Castelseprio to Milan; the Della Torre and the Visconti long fought over its castle.

When the Seprio passed for good to the Visconti in 1287, Fagnano was split in two: the castle to one branch of the family, the other stronghold, the Castellazzo, to another branch. By the mid fifteenth century the castle was a lordly residence; it turned military again in the sixteenth as the Spanish and French quarrel sharpened, and today it holds the town offices. The arms join the Visconti serpent to the red cross of Milan, under a motto in gold letters: A Bon Fin. The river joined the name after unification, to avoid confusion with Fagnano sul Naviglio.
