Gorla Maggiore

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,081 · Postal code: 21050

Two Roman altars have been found in the territory of Gorla Maggiore, and both of them record a thanksgiving. On the first, dedicated to Diana and fitted with its little dish for incense, a woman called Rivasia says she is offering it because her father, whose name was Mieco, escaped danger. The second, dedicated to Jupiter Best and Greatest, came to light during the restoration of the church of Saints Vitalis and Valeria: it was offered by one Meserius Verus, for a favour received.

About the name of the village, on the other hand, there is no agreement. By 1046 the documents already say Gorla Maior, and next to it there is a Minor, but why that Maggiore remains to be explained: elsewhere Upper and Lower, or New and Old, would have been used. As for Gorla, some derive it from a word meaning gorge or ravine, some from the swirling of the waters of the Olona, some from a Lombard root meaning a weir. One part of the village is still called Canton Lombardo, and it was there, in all likelihood, that a group of those people settled.
