Feast of Saint Antoninus the Martyr
📅 Every year, on 13 November
On 13 November Lozza celebrates its patron Saint Antoninus the Martyr, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
The village name means more or less manure: from the Celtic lossa, or the Latin lutum, mud, and it referred to the sludge of earth and vegetable waste heaped at the roadside to rot and become fertiliser. The word has survived all around: in Lombard loegia is manured earth, in the Ticino slozz means soaking wet, and in Corsica lozzu is slime.
In Roman times the road from Milan to Lugano by way of Varese passed through here. From 1648 the village belonged to the Castiglioni, who built a small summer house here, still wedged among the houses. The Lozza railway halt, opened in 1915 on the Valmorea line, lost its passenger service in 1938 and was closed the following year.
