Lonate Ceppino

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,860 · Postal code: 21050

The coat of arms of Lonate Ceppino shows a moon and a log: they are canting arms, built on the sound of the dialect name, Lonàa Cepin. The name, however, speaks neither of moons nor of logs: Lonate is thought to come from the Celtic root lona, which means a pool of water, and there is a spring to bear it out, not far from the old parish church, which in these parts was held to be miraculous from ancient times.

That old church, dedicated to Saint Peter, stands on the edge of the slope that drops into the Olona valley: it was altered in the seventeenth century and at the beginning of the twentieth it was replaced, having become too small for the people of the village. The territory is watered by the Olona and its tributary the Bozzone, and for seventy years it also had a railway, the Valmorea line: the station opened in 1904, lost its passengers in 1952 and closed altogether in 1977, along with the whole line.

Saints Peter and Paul, patrons of the old palio

📅 Every year, on 29 June; July once brought the district palio

Lonate Ceppino celebrates Saints Peter and Paul on 29 June. In the past, every July, the town's districts competed in a playful-sporting palio, suppressed between 1948 and the late 1960s.
