Saints Philip and James, patrons of the Stoppani Museum

Venegono Inferiore celebrates Saints Philip and James on 3 May, in the church dedicated to them.
The name of Venegono Inferiore is a riddle that its coat of arms doubles instead of solving. The silver wavy bend traces the place name to the Gallo-Celtic roots vin, 'water', and gon, 'mountain', after the two watercourses in the territory; the motto Venus pulchritudinis dea, 'Venus goddess of beauty', keeps instead the games of Venus, which the canon Bonaventura Castiglioni contracted into Vene-gon. The shield adds three gold chestnuts — the rossina di Venegono, a local variety with small nuts — and a castle recalling the medieval stronghold that ruled the territory.
The village enters history in 737, among the signatures on the Harta Iudicati by which Manecunda founded the monastery of nearby Cairate: one witness is recorded as of Venegono. By 1286 it had consuls of its own. The two Venegono have twice been merged into a single comune and twice pulled apart: Napoleon willed the first union and the Austrian restoration undid it; the second ran from 1928 to 1960 and party politics broke it, the Christian Democrats of Venegono Inferiore having no stomach for a socialist-communist comune. Today the Milan archdiocesan seminary stands here, beside the Arturo Ferrarin airfield and the Aermacchi works that turn out the MB-339 of the Frecce Tricolori.
