Saint John Bosco, patron of Valmorea
📅 Every year, on 31 January
Valmorea celebrates Saint John Bosco on 31 January, with Saint Blaise as second patron on 3 February.
A village called Valmorea does not exist: the municipality takes its name from the valley it spreads over, not from any settlement. It is made of two centres, Caversaccio and Casanova Lanza, joined into a single body by a royal decree of 1928. Caversaccio appears as early as a document of 852, when some goods had to be divided between a widow named Adelburga and one Balderico, of Alemannic nationality. Casanova, for its part, changed its name twice before the merger: it was Casanova di Uggiate from 1864 to 1903 and then Casanova Lanza, after the stream that runs in the valley.
On a house near the church of Caversaccio there is a plaque recalling an unexpected guest: Carl Mozart, son of Wolfgang Amadeus, who moved here for a time to treat his gout. In the woods is the Sas de la prea, an enormous boulder of unclear origin, and near the former railway station there is a pond they call Buzzun. Since 2002 the territory has been part of the Valle del Lanza park, together with Malnate, Cagno, Rodero and Bizzarone. Two thousand six hundred and fifty-six inhabitants in the province of Como.
