Europe's paper was born here: from the thirteenth century Fabriano's master papermakers perfected the watermark and animal sizing, inventions that made the city supplier to chancelleries and artists — and its mills still produce the paper of watercolourists and banknotes. The museum of paper and watermark, in a former convent, shows masters at work at the vat.
A UNESCO Creative City, Fabriano was the birthplace of Gentile, prince of International Gothic. The Piazza del Comune with the Podestà palace and Sturinalto fountain is among the most harmonious in the Marche; Fabriano salami is the encore nobody refuses.
