Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel
📅 Every year, on 8 May
On 8 May Montelparo, a municipality of 861 inhabitants in the Fermo area, celebrates its patron Saint Michael the Archangel, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
The name of the village is a Lombard's: Elprando, or Eliprando, who between the seventh and the eleventh centuries built a castle up here with a first ring of walls; in the documents of the monks of Farfa, in the twelfth century, the place is called Mons Elprandi. The monks, who had taken refuge in nearby Santa Vittoria in Matenano, held the castle and added a monastery and the church of San Michele Arcangelo, plus a second ring of walls. Then came a third. The old centre reads like that, in rings: three circuits, and each with four gates.
In 1511 the village gave itself a Monte frumentario, the public granary that lent grain to farmers until harvest. Then came trouble: the new diocese Sixtus V created at Montalto took away part of Montelparo's privileges, and the earthquake of 1703 brought down much of the town. In the Augustinian cloister there is now an exhibition worth the journey on its own: the travelling trades, the ones people practised going around by bicycle.
