Monte Rinaldo

Province: Fermo · Region: Marche · Population: 397 · Postal code: 63852

Half a kilometre outside the village, at La Cuma, stands a sanctuary of the second century before Christ with a two-aisled portico, and to understand it you have to know that there were no towns around here: it was the only public building in the whole Aso valley, and people came not only to pray but also to have justice administered and to trade. Then it was abandoned, and a farm rose in its place. Its stones, though, were not lost: large blocks of tufa identical to those of the archaeological site can still be seen in the front of the church of the Crocefisso, which today houses the village's archaeological museum.

The name comes from a boy. A Norman, Malugero Melo, son of Drogo of Hauteville, reached these lands as a fugitive together with his mother; here he married a woman called Mòrica and had three children, and to one of them, Rinaldo, he entrusted the castle he had built. The first document naming the place is older still: a donation of 1032, by which the abbess of a monastery at Petritoli gave that castle to the abbey of Montecassino. The village stands on three hills, halfway between the sea and the Sibillini.
