Feast of Saint Lawrence the Martyr
📅 Every year, on 10 August
On 10 August Moresco, a municipality of 605 inhabitants in the province of Fermo, celebrates its patron Saint Lawrence the martyr (san Lorenzo martire) with a concert in Piazza Castello.
The mark of Moresco is its tower: heptagonal, that is seven-sided, twenty-five metres high, raised in the twelfth century with Ghibelline battlements. Why seven sides nobody knows; some think it was only to tell it apart from the other watchtowers in Fermo's defensive system. From the top, on clear days, the eye travels from Monte Conero to the Gran Sasso and further still, to the far shore of the Adriatic.
On the village's name the stories contradict one another: some derive it from a lord called Morico or from the Mori family, some from the dialect word morrecine, the heap of stones the castle rests on, and then there are two opposing legends — one has it that Moors, coming up the Adriatic coast, pushed inland this far to build a stronghold, the other that the Castrum Morisci was raised precisely to drive the Saracens back. In 1266 the local lords sold the fortress to Lorenzo Tiepolo, doge of Venice and at that moment podestà of Fermo, and from then on the castle belonged to Fermo. Moresco lost its comune in 1868, becoming a hamlet of Monterubbiano, and took it back in 1910. The deconsecrated little church of Santa Sofia, which people here call lu teatrì, has become a small theatre.
