When, between the twelfth and the thirteenth centuries, the castle was moved to the top of the hill, the inhabitants of all the villages around moved into it: and each group settled, with its church and its houses, in the quarter that faced the place they had come from. The first settlement had grown around the church of San Quirico, which belonged to the monks of Fonte Avellana; the patron saint is still he, a child saint.

Of the walls two gates remain: Porta da Sole and Porta Marina, the latter with swallow-tail battlements. In the church of San Nicolò, now deconsecrated and used for concerts, there is an altarpiece by Simone De Magistris of 1596; in San Lorenzo an organ by Gaetano Callido of 1784. The fountain in the square is of 1900, when the water supply arrived.
