Ponzano di Fermo

Province: Fermo · Region: Marche · Population: 1,708 · Postal code: 63845

Along the Ete stand the ruins of an octagonal church, raised after the Madonna was said to have appeared to some peasants as they were making stacks of the firewood they had gathered along the river: they call it the Madonna of the Stacks. A fire took away its roof, and the woodland of the river swallowed it up.

The church of Santa Maria Mater Domini was built in the twelfth century over something of the sixth or seventh; the land had been given by a Lombard duke to the monks of Farfa, and in 1059 the monks passed it to the bishop of Fermo. In 1570, after pressure on pope Pius V, the castle of Ponzano was separated from the comune of Fermo; and in 1862 the village took back the name Ponzano di Fermo, so as not to be confused with the other Ponzanos of Italy.
