Montefiore dell'Aso

Province: Ascoli Piceno · Region: Marche · Population: 2,180 · Postal code: 63062

Montefiore hangs over the ridge between the Aso and the Menocchia, on five hills: Menalo, Baraffio, Castello, Vittorino, Aspromonte. The coat of arms, taken from the statutes of 1569, sets five flowers on those five hills and carries a Latin couplet: Flora locum tenuit qui nunc de nomine florum dicitur, the goddess Flora ruled the place that is now called by the name of flowers.

The village was born in 1178 from the merging of the castles of Montefiore and Aspramonte, and was disputed by Ascoli and Fermo until the solemn peace of 1421. In the convent of San Francesco, where the painter Adolfo De Carolis, born here, is buried, the museum shows what is left of Carlo Crivelli's polyptych, dismembered and scattered: a Saint Peter between Saint Catherine of Alexandria and the Magdalene.
