Magliano di Tenna

Province: Fermo · Region: Marche · Population: 1,426 · Postal code: 63832

In 1965 Paolo Volponi won the Strega Prize with «La macchina mondiale», and its protagonist, the peasant philosopher Anteo Crocioni, was born out of a man from Magliano: Pietro Mario Vallasciani, known as de Lu Serpu, whom Volponi had met at Ivrea. At the opening of the novel the writer warns that whoever wants to know those theories in full may get in touch with him, through the author.

The castle was already there in 1030 and for centuries was contested between Fermo and Montegiorgio, which passed it back and forth; Fermo, for that matter, counted forty-eight dependent castles. In 1428 a quarrel with Grottazzolina over pastures ended in Magliano's favour. The village still has the round shape of its walls, two towers and the Porta da Bora, long its only entrance.
