Feast of Saint Nicholas of Myra
📅 Every year, on 6 December
The patron of Monte Giberto, Saint Nicholas of Myra, is celebrated on 6 December, though the town's main festivity has become the 8 September feast of the Madonna delle Grazie.
The first time Monte Giberto appears in a document is in 1166, in a codex of the Fermo archive. A couple of centuries later, around 1356, the Descriptio Marchiae Anconitanae compiled in the time of cardinal Albornoz places it among the castles «towards the mountains» and calls it Castrum Montis Giberti. It long depended on Fermo: until 1830 the municipality was governed by a podestà who came from there. On the square, the church of San Nicolò, the town hall and the bell tower form a single eighteenth-century block, all in brick, like nearly all the architecture of this area.
The official patron is Saint Nicholas of Bari, whose day is the sixth of December, but the village feast is another one: the eighth of September, that of the Madonna delle Grazie, and it is on that day that the shops close. The sanctuary dedicated to her was built in 1757 over a twelfth-century church, to a design by the Lugano architect Giambattista Vassalli, and the portico in front of it was added by don Nicola Arpili, the priest who in the eighteen hundreds also founded the village hospital. The craft here is lacemaking.
