Feast of Saint John the Baptist
📅 Every year, on 24 June
On 24 June Rapagnano, a municipality of 2,044 inhabitants in the province of Fermo, celebrates its patron Saint John the Baptist, whose right hand it keeps in a reliquary.
The name comes from turnips, which are also on the arms: they are said to be the ones planted in the lands the bishop of Fermo gave a local count in 1059. With Montegiorgio relations were always bad, and in 1533 it went like this: two bells were cast, one for the church of San Giovanni at Montegiorgio and one for that of Rapagnano, and the men of Rapagnano took the first by force as well.
In the second war the village filled up: refugees from the bombed coast brought it from eighteen hundred inhabitants to nearly four thousand, the highest in its history. Food and beds ran short, and to keep warm they burned the town's own papers. Escaped Allied prisoners from the Fermo camp found shelter here too, until the authorities threatened reprisals.
