Castelsantangelo sul Nera

Province: Macerata · Region: Marche · Population: 310 · Postal code: 62039

In 1255 the last feudal lord of the castle made an unusual bargain: he gave up his property and all his feudal rights in exchange for the office of podestà, and so the village passed under the free comune of Visso. In 1522 the men of the castle beat Norcia in the battle of the Pian Perduto, fought over the pastures, although the Norcians outnumbered them ten to one: it was a shepherd-poet from here who told the story in verse.

The river Nera rises here, and the Valnerina begins. Independence from Visso came late, granted by law in the twentieth century and only carried out some years later; the «sul Nera» in the name is more recent still. In October 2016 the earthquakes, with their epicentre in this very comune, destroyed almost the whole of the old centre and of the outlying villages.
