Preci

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 757 · Postal code: 06047

Between the late Middle Ages and the seventeenth century Preci had a famous school of surgery: its surgeons were specialists in removing kidney stones, an art that grew up in the shadow of the abbey of Sant'Eutizio.

The town developed inside a thirteenth-century fortress. An earthquake destroyed almost all of it in 1328, and in 1527 the troops of cardinal Armellini finished the job; each time it was rebuilt. A comune since 1817, in October 2016 it was struck again: the tremors damaged the abbey and left the historic centre unusable. The 757 residents are still there.
