Petriolo

Province: Macerata · Region: Marche · Population: 1,977 · Postal code: 62014

The name most probably comes from praetoriolum, the small villa of a praetor of Urbs Salvia; others prefer the sandstone, or the sulphurous springs so oily that people ended up talking of petroleum. In 1264 king Manfred, furious that the sons of the lord of Petriolo would not stay Ghibelline, ordered the castle destroyed and the inhabitants deported to Montolmo: for reasons still unknown, the deportation never took place.

On the round tower of the walls there is a stone with the words «FIRMI-PETRIOLUM» and the date 1529, which may mark not its building but the year the castle came back under Fermo; in 1782 the new town hall took away its roof. In 1942 a women's internment camp was set up in a country villa of this comune.
