Sant'Ippolito

Province: Pesaro and Urbino · Region: Marche · Population: 1,574 · Postal code: 61040

The village was made between the sixth and the seventh century by the people of Fossombrone. There were quarries here, and from the thirteen hundreds to the seventeen hundreds it lived on stone: marble workers, stonecutters and sculptors, whose work can still be seen in the parish church and at Reforzate. The clock tower, on the other hand, is of iron, with an onion cupola.

Today the village also works bamboo, into furnishings. And Giuseppe Ottaviani was from here: he took up the long jump and the triple jump at ninety-five, and at a hundred he was jumping three metres twenty-seven — no other centenarian in the world has ever recorded a valid triple jump in competition. He died here in 2020, aged a hundred and four.
