Serra Sant'Abbondio

Province: Pesaro and Urbino · Region: Marche · Population: 1,099 · Postal code: 61040

The monastery of Fonte Avellana is here, six kilometres from the village, below Monte Catria: it was founded perhaps by Saint Romuald around 980, and Saint Peter Damian was its prior from 1043 to 1057. In 1928 Serra Sant'Abbondio was joined to Frontone in a single comune, called Frontone Serra, with a coat of arms carrying the symbols of both; in 1946 they became two again.

The woods, meadows and pastures of the Catria belong to no one in particular: they are administered by the Comunanza Agraria, heir of the Università degli Uomini Originari, recorded since the end of the thirteenth century, under a set of rules of 1841. On the second Sunday of September the three villages and the three castles of the medieval territory challenge each other at the Palio della Rocca, which is run with geese.
