Scheggia e Pascelupo

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,442 · Postal code: 06027

At the pass, where the Via Flaminia climbed over the Apennines, stood the oracular sanctuary of Jupiter Appenninus, and beside it the posting station the Roman maps call ad Ensem. Destroyed in the Gothic war, it was rebuilt by the Byzantines; local people called it Schiza, their speech still carrying Greek.

The comune took its present name in 1878, when Pascelupo was joined to it: it is the only one in Umbria lying entirely on the Adriatic side. The mountain above the town is called Calvario, from the Latin calles oviariae, the sheep paths, because that is the way up to the pastures of Monte Cucco. In the woods of the 1,442 residents live the wolf, the golden eagle and the otter.
