Belmonte del Sannio

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 810 · Postal code: 86080

Belmonte was Abruzzese for six hundred years: until 1807 it belonged to Abruzzo Citeriore, then the Napoleonic reorganisation handed it to Molise, and the del Sannio came after unification. It is still linked to Abruzzo by a bridge over the Sente, one of the highest in Europe.

At colle Sant'Angelo, outside the village, there is a stone tomb which the inscriptions call that of Ovius Paccius: the priest who, Livy tells us, made the Samnite warriors swear their oath before battle. In the old village there remain a round Lombard tower of the ninth century and the palace the Caracciolo raised on top of the castle. There are 810 residents.
