Castelverrino

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 124 · Postal code: 86080

It was called Castelluccio d'Agnone, and in dialect they still call it Castëllùccë. It was a piece of Poggio Sannita until a decree of 25 January 1820 cut it loose and made it a comune of its own — the same decree that gave several small Molise villages their independence that year.

It has stayed small ever since, or rather grown smaller: 124 people live here now, which puts it among the least populated comuni in Italy. The Contado di Molise it once belonged to has been gone for two centuries; the village has not.
