Poggio Sannita

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 764 · Postal code: 86086

On 20 February 1921 the town council put on record that the village's name, Caccavone, made people laugh: the first part recalled something disgusting, the second was an augmentative that filled the mouth. They changed it to Vinoli. In July they thought again — Vinoli said too little — and chose Poggio Sannita, which a royal decree approved on 15 January 1922.

The caccavo, though, did not go away: it was the copper cauldron in which farmers curdled their milk, and it is still on the town's coat of arms. The village, 764 residents, is perched at 705 metres between two torrents, the Verrino and the Sente, and the latter dries up completely in summer.
