The village got back on its feet by way of apples: there is a museum-garden with more than sixty old varieties from the Alto Sangro, and the old rural hamlet has been turned into an albergo diffuso, a hotel scattered through the houses. For a comune of 355 people in the middle of the Apennines, none of that was a given.
In Norman times it was Castellum Iudicis, perhaps from the Iodice family, perhaps from the lord who dispensed justice here. Jacopo Caldora was born in the village in 1369 and became one of the most powerful condottieri in the Kingdom of Naples. The village sits in the Alto Sangro, on the river and the lake.

Castel del Giudice celebrates Saint Nicholas of Bari on 6 December; on 15 August another feast carries the statue of the Madonna from the sanctuary of Saletta to the village centre, in a procession accompanying the Assumption Mass.
