Blades have been made at Frosolone for centuries: knives and scissors, and there is a museum that tells the trade. The town stands at 894 metres, on a slope so windy that a wind farm has been put up there.
The name is thought to come from the Latin frendere, to grind, because of the crumbling ground; the other explanations, the hawfinch on the gonfalon and monks come from Frosinone, are false etymologies. Above the town, at Civitelle, stand the megalithic walls of the Samnites. The earthquake of 1456, whose epicentre was here, flattened the place and killed more than three hundred; the one of 1805 killed 518. The 3,255 residents have rebuilt twice.
