Spinete

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 1,373 · Postal code: 86020

Until 1879 the farmers of Spinete all lived in the village and walked up to three kilometres each morning, hoe over the shoulder, to the landowners’ fields. Then the prefecture ordered the common lands shared out: many built a house beside the plot that fell to them, and the thirteen borgate were born, where part of the 1,373 residents still live.

The coat of arms says the same: an axe tied to a bundle of brambles. In October 1943 the village, 600 metres up under the Matese, sat on the Volturno line: after three days of bombing the Germans blew two bridges and pulled out; on the night of the 23rd a Canadian advance party forded the Biferno and entered by the borgata Monte.

Saint John the Baptist, patron celebrated on the day of his birth

📅 Every year, on 24 June

Spinete celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 24 June, the anniversary of his birth; the church dedicated to him stands in the hamlet of the same name, one of thirteen that make up the municipality alongside the main town and the hamlet of Piana.
