Macchiagodena

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 1,844 · Postal code: 86096

At Macchiagodena there is a small square where books sit out, free, for anyone who wants to read them; and whoever gives one to the town library earns a holiday. Since 2016 the village has been the national seat of the Borghi della lettura.

The castrum was founded in 964 by the counts of Isernia, Pandolfo and Landolfo, under the name Maccla de Godino. The castle, on top of the cliff, has two battered towers and a corridor down to the cellars, where prisoners were once tortured; at the entrance to the church of San Lorenzo stands a medieval cross with Christ, the Virgin and the deacon Lawrence holding his gridiron. The 1,844 residents live among the woods.
