Albera Ligure

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 329 · Postal code: 15060

Albera Ligure lies on the right bank of the Borbera, the stream that names the valley, below Monte Ebro, the highest summit in the province of Alessandria. The Albirola, which divides the main settlement from the hamlet of San Martino, most likely took its name from the village. Until 1863 the municipality was called simply Albera, and its arms carry the gold letters A and L on red, above a tower with Guelph merlons.

At Vendersi, around the ninth century and on the remains of a Roman settlement, a Benedictine abbey took in peasants fleeing the barbarian invasions; once it declined, its property became a papal fief and an ecclesiastical immunity of the diocese of Tortona, under a provost answering directly to the pope. In the second half of the seventeenth century Carlo Settala, bishop of Tortona, had coins struck in Albera's name: the Settala arms on one side, a bishop with mitre and crozier on the other. In 1929 the village was merged into Rocchetta Ligure, becoming independent again in 1947.
