Cantalupo Ligure

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 549 · Postal code: 15060

Cantalupo Ligure sits on the right bank of the Borbera, in the upper valley. The second name is from 1863: after unification three comuni were called Cantalupo, and each took a second word, in Sabina, nel Sannio and Ligure here. In August 1944, at Pertuso, a partisan detachment and some farmers with hunting rifles held off far larger forces for three days.

The castle of Borgo Adorno was Spinola property until 1518, when Tolomeo, without legitimate children, made his friend Agostino Adorno's sons his heirs. A landslide late in the seventeenth century ruined it, and marquis Luigi Botta Adorno pulled part down to raise the present house, with its round tower and painted gateway.
