Cabella Ligure

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 554 · Postal code: 15060

Cabella Ligure stands in the Ligurian Apennines, where the Liassa joins the Borbera, and is one of only three Piedmontese municipalities that border Emilia-Romagna. It is named in twelfth-century documents. In 1783 the Pallavicini sold the fiefs of Cabella, Cremonte and Fontanarossa to prince Andrea IV Doria Pamphili for seven hundred and fifty thousand Genoese lire. The name gained “Ligure” only with the move to the province of Alessandria.

The Doria palace still holds the village from its high wall: a white quadrangular block, medieval in origin, wholly rebuilt in the seventeenth century. Below, the bell tower of San Lorenzo, founded in 1607, carries a clock under an onion dome.
