Basaluzzo

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,071 · Postal code: 15060

There are two roads to the name: the first takes it from Basiligutia, which would point to a basilica nearby; the second from Bis lucum, that is among the woods.

The place appears in a diploma of 981, by which the emperor Otto II granted it in fief to the monastery of San Salvatore in Pavia; the grant was later confirmed by two more documents, signed by Otto III and by Arduin of Ivrea. In 1799 the village was the scene of a bloody clash between the French under Moreau and the Austro-Russians under Suvorov. The castle of Clarefuentes has a massive tower.
