Capriata d'Orba

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,926 · Postal code: 15060

The village first appears in writing in a deed of sale of 973: the son of the marquis Ildeprando hands over a few places to one Roprando, and Capriata is among them. Much later its capture, in 1625, opened the war between Savoy and Genoa.

The village is one of the main centres of the Novese, the strip of southern Piedmont named after Novi Ligure. Above the houses stand the ruins of the Castelvecchio, and stretches of the town walls and bastions are still visible. The commune was called simply Capriata: the Orba, the river on whose right bank it sits, entered the name in 1863.
