Fresonara

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 739 · Postal code: 15064

The name Fresonara has no sure origin. The commonest guess takes Frisinaria from Frassinaria, after the ash trees of the plain along the Orba, the wood where Lombard kings hunted. Others proposed a Saracen fort, or the Roman family of the Fresus. The arms, never granted by decree, show a tree on a stony terrace: it may be an ash.

As Frisinaria it appears in 969, given by queen Adelaide and emperor Otto I to San Salvatore of Pavia. In 1404 Facino Cane's lieutenants rebelled and he levelled village and castle. Above the roofs stands the brick bell tower of the parish church, its dial in Roman numerals under a copper cap.
