Carrega Ligure

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 83 · Postal code: 15060

Carrega Ligure lies at the south-eastern tip of Piedmont, in the upper Val Borbera, the only municipality in the region bordering both Emilia-Romagna and Liguria. In Ligurian its name is Carêga, «chair», and Ligurian is still spoken here: for centuries it looked to Genoa, to the Imperial Fiefs and the salt-road trade, and in 1547 Charles V invested Andrea Doria as marquis of Carrega. It passed to the province of Alessandria only in the nineteenth century.

Until 1963 no road climbed from the valley floor: people went on foot, by mule across the Carreghino torrent again and again, or on the lese, ox-drawn sledges. When the road came, depopulation sped up instead of stopping, and many hamlets stand empty today, above all in the Campassi valley. With about one and a half inhabitants per square kilometre, Carrega is among Italy's least densely peopled municipalities, the first outside the Alps.
