Costa Vescovato

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 357 · Postal code: 15050

Until 1863 the village was called Costa; its second name recalls the bishops of Tortona, who held these lands as an enclave with full lordship. Costa appears in documents from 1187. In 1784 the bishops surrendered that sovereignty to the House of Savoy, taking in exchange Cambiò in Lomellina with the title of prince, the toll on the Po and the sturgeon fishing.

The coat of arms repeats it: a green hill with thirteen red houses and, on top, the church crossed by its bell tower, with a bishop's crozier in the corner. The parish church is Saint Martin's; Montale Celli, now a hamlet, was the pieve from which Costa broke away in the sixteenth century.
