Paderna

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 231 · Postal code: 15050

Paderna stands on the last Apennine spurs, right of the Scrivia, on a ridge between two valleys. The name is almost certainly the ellipsis of (Praedia) Paterna, the estates inherited from the father, or of (Villa) Paterna. The village was founded in the Middle Ages by people from nearby Tortona, probably above an older settlement between the present houses and Spineto. The first news dates from 1155, when the Montemerlo, lords of the place, went to the aid of Tortona besieged by Frederick Barbarossa.

Paderna then passed in fief to the Spinola and afterwards to the Carbone, until between 1676 and 1688 the inhabitants bought the fief back, for more independence. The parish church of San Giorgio, already named in documents of the eleventh century, divides the lower village from the upper with its bulk: the front is of the fifteenth century, and some have read the central nave as early Christian, without proof. The town hall stands where an old castle stood, and a Romanesque bell tower is all that survives of a very old pieve in the hollow of Vezzano.
