Carezzano

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 444 · Postal code: 15051

Carezzano sits on the hills right of the Scrivia, and for centuries it was not one village but two, same name, separate identities. The name joins two archaic Ligurian words, car, "height", and san, "place": the upper one is thought older, though the lower grew larger. They merged in 1928.

Carezzano Inferiore was capital of the "Vescovato" of Tortona from the late fourteenth century to the late sixteenth: the bishop kept his curia, court, vicar and prisons there. Executions took place on the hill of Castiglione, where in the summer of 1520 three women from the Val Magra were burned as witches. Its arms show two facing bell towers under a crossed sabre and crosier.
