Feast of Saint George
📅 Every year, on 23 April
On 23 April Cerreto Grue, a municipality of 325 inhabitants in the province of Alessandria, celebrates its patron Saint George, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
Cerreto is where the turkey oaks, the cerri, grow; Grue is the stream below the village, added to keep it apart from the other Cerreto in Italy. In the early nineteenth century it was Cerreto della Malta instead, because rain turned the local roads to mud. The first reliable record is from 1196, a document in the Tortona chapter archive naming one Ribaldo di Cerreto, provost of the cathedral.
The settlement grew around a riduto sarrato, the fortified place of the de Cerreto, the family called Pernigotti from the sixteenth century; of the medieval core a square stone structure survives in Vicolo della Torre and, where via Grue meets via Roma, a brick tower with a battered wall. In 1647 the community paid not to be enfeoffed to captain Nicolò Maria Busseti of Tortona, and held out until 1689, when the cerretesi gave up their autonomy and accepted the Busseti brothers.
