It is the easternmost comune in Piedmont, bordering Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy, its houses scattered in hamlets up the high Curone valley. The village grew around its pieve, on land of the abbey of San Colombano at Bobbio; it was given a castle, and in 1157 a papal bull handed it to the bishops of Tortona.
The pieve of Santa Maria Assunta is Romanesque, a gabled central nave with two lower aisles; above the stone doorway sits a lunette carved with a frieze. The stone bell tower ends in a lantern and carries the clock. At Lunassi a museum of peasant life gathers the tools of people who scraped a living from poor soil.
