Montacuto

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 306 · Postal code: 15050

Montacuto, Montèigo in Ligurian, lies in the Curone valley on the Museglia stream, at the foot of Monte Giarolo, in the territory of the Quattro province. In the thirteenth century it held a pieve on which every parish of the valley depended; the fief later passed to the Frascaroli marquises. The commune is not one settlement but a scatter of hamlets on the slopes: Benegassi, Giarolo, Restegassi, Solarolo, Costa dei Ferrai.

The arms carry a gold M on blue, seven ears of wheat bound with red on green, an uprooted pine on red, and on a gold chief a black double-headed eagle with both heads crowned. The Frascaroli arms fill the sinister partition. Of the castle, rebuilt in the seventeenth century and then abandoned, only ruins remain; the church of San Pietro was redone in baroque form in the same century.
