Feast of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist
📅 Every year, on 29 August
On 29 August Garbagna, a municipality of 707 inhabitants in the province of Alessandria, celebrates the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist.
Garbagna sits on the Tortona hills, right of the Scrivia. Two explanations compete for the name: the emperor Galba, said to have founded it in the first century, or late Latin garbus, thicket; old charters give Garbanigus, Garbania, Garbanea. It first appears in a diploma of Hugh of Provence, king of Italy, dated 945, granting Tortona lands to count Elisiardo.
It was one of seven imperial fiefs Charles V granted to admiral Andrea Doria in 1548, after the failed Fieschi plot. Outside the village is the sanctuary of the Madonna del Lago, where tradition says the Virgin appeared in 1341 to a mute shepherd girl, later healed. The hills yield the ciliegia bella di Garbagna.
